DEFEAT FOR WASHINGTON
Palestinians set for showdown
with US over UN seat
The New York Times — Ethan Bronner & Isabel Kershner
EVER SHRINKING — These four maps show the creeping dispossession of the Palestinians from their homeland
between 1946 and 2000. The process continues to this day with the building of more and more Jewish settlements.
The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, announced Friday that
he would see membership for a state of Palestine from the United
Nations Security Council next week, putting him on a collision course
with Israel and the United States a
nd the United States as both face
an Arab world in turmoil. Mr. Abbas’s plan, made public in a television
address, follows months of failed American and European efforts to
restart Palestinian negotiations with Israel. … Combined with alarmed
reactions from Israeli settlers, violent showdowns could erupt. But the
Palestinians say that after decades of occupation and about 20 years
of failed talks with an increasingly hawkish Israel, it is time for a new
approach …
The decision to apply for membership through the Council signals
a double defeat for the United States. Washington not only failed to
dissuade the Palestinians from a unilateral bid for statehood, but also
fell short of its goal of confining the application to the United Nations
General Assembly … The Obama administration has vowed to use
its veto at the Council to prevent full recognition of Palestine. …
For the Obama administration, the move poses an acute dilemma. …
A veto of Palestinian membership would intensify Arab perceptions
of American double standards.

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that recognition
of a Palestinian state is an obligation not an option. He told the Arab
League that before the year’s end “we will see Palestine in a very
different situation.” Mr Erdogan made a new attack on Israel, saying
its government’s mentality was a barrier to peace in the Middle East.
The Palestinians are currently preparing a bid for United Nations
membership despite Israeli and US opposition … He accused Israel
of behaving like a spoilt child and building a blockade round its own
people through its policies. “Israel will break away from solitude only
when it acts as a reasonable, responsible, serious and normal state,”
he said.

the international waters.“Israel will no longer be able to do what it wants
in the Mediterranean and you’ll be seeing Turkish warships in this sea,”
Erdogan said after a meeting with his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid
Essebsi, AFP reported. The Turkish leader also reiterated Ankara’s call
on Israel to formally apologize for last year’s deadly takeover of a Gaza-
bound aid convoy. … The strike left nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists,

Jerusalem is under massive pressure … If Netanyahu is now backing

are no strangers to crisis, but they will remember the last few weeks
for a long time. Rarely has the Jewish state suffered so many setbacks

Ahmadinejad: Zionists started both world wars
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Israel of perpetuating
terror, and blamed the “Zionist regime” for starting both the first and
second world wars. “The Zionist regime is always doing the same thing.
They destroy people’s homes and raze them to the ground,” Ahmadinejad
told the Washington Post Tuesday. “They have created a few major wars.
They continue to assassinate and terrorize people; they continue their
policy of coercion against other nations, including Iran.” …

Support for Israel drives US Mideast policies, says US ambassador
Anti-War — Alison Weir
Anti-War — Alison Weir
While many Americans may believe that US policies are designed to
address American needs, America’s new Ambassador to Israel explains
that this is far from the case. In a recent speech before the Jewish
People Policy Institute (JPPI), Ambassador Daniel Shapiro clarified
what drives US policies: “The test of every policy the Administration
develops in the Middle East is whether it is consistent with the goal
of ensuring Israel’s future as a secure, Jewish, democratic state.
That is a commitment that runs as a common thread through our
entire government.” Shapiro went on to say: “This test explains our
extraordinary security cooperation, our stand against the delegitimiza-
ion of Israel, our efforts on Iran, our response to the Arab Spring, and
our efforts on Israeli-Palestinian peace.”

convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago after his lawyers
contended his sentence was unfair because of a question asked about
race during the trial. Duane Buck, 48, was spared from lethal injection
when the justices … said they would review an appeal in his case. Two
appeals, both related to a psychologist’s testimony that black people
were more likely to commit violence, were before the court. … Buck was
sentenced to death for the fatal shootings of his ex-girlfriend and a man

his lawyers say the jury was unfairly influenced and that he should receive
a new sentencing hearing.
Federal government threatens Cherokees over slave descendants
The Associated Press — Justin Juozapavicius

The federal government sent the sternly-worded letter to the Cherokee
Nation after it sent letters last week kicking the descendants out of the
tribe and stripping them of benefits including medical care, food stipends
and assistance for low-income homeowners. The tribe also barred the
descendants from voting in a Sept. 24 special election for principal chief.
The Cherokee Supreme Court ordered the special election after it said it
could not determine with certainty the outcome of a close and hotly
contested June election between incumbent Chad Smith and longtime
tribal councilman Bill John Baker. …
The federal government said that
unless the descendants, known as freedmen, were allowed to vote, the
upcoming election wouldn’t be valid.
…
[Acting Chief S. Joe] Crittenden
said the special election would take
place as scheduled. “The Cherokee
Nation will not be governed by

“We will hold our election and
continue our long legacy of responsible
self-governance.” ... The tribe
never owned black slaves, but some
individual members did. They were
freed after the Civil War, in which the
tribe allied with the Confederacy. …
